Kern County Museum to receive billboard support

By Anthony Bailey

Come out and celebrate with the Kern County Museum, 3801 Chester Ave., on May 3 at 9:30 a.m., as the museum receives a large grant from the Kern County Board of Trade to promote tourism.

Supervisor Mike Maggard will be presenting a check to Museum Director Jeff Nickell in front of the old Chamber of Commerce building that for years has served as the museum's main building and has just been recently renovated.

Funding from the board of trade grant will allow the museum to post a billboard at either the north or south boundaries of the county on Highway 99/I-5, promoting the museum and the California Living Museum (CALM) as destinations to see for visitors traveling through or stopping in Kern County.

Featured prominently on the billboard will be each museum's website address and telephone number, as well as that of the board of trade.

For more information, please contact Nickell at (661) 852-5000.

Silent movie showing with pipe-organ music

Submitted by Carol Ferguson on Thursday, April 29th, 6:21 pm

It's a trip down memory lane. The historic Granada Theater, 616 Kentucky St., will show the silent movie classic "Two Tars," complete with nostalgic pipe-organ music.

The Laurel and Hardy film will be shown Sunday. The 1928 film will be accompanied by the music sound track performed live on a Wurlitzer Theater Pipe Organ.

The 23-ton pipe organ was built in the 1920s to play background music for silent movies.

Theater owner Jim Spohn calls the special showing, "a step back into history."

The Laurel and Harvey movie is about two sailors on shore leave. They rent a car and go on a drive with their dates but get involved in a huge traffic jam. It all ends up with boiling tempers and eventually most of the cars in pieces.

Spohn says there will be a short pipe organ demonstration and showing of selected historic film clips. The show lasts about an hour.

Doors will open at 1 p.m.
