Highland High School plans reunion

Reptiles to roam at the library

There are all sorts of ways to get kids interested in reading, but this next idea is a little hairy, or should we say "scale-y"?

As part of their summer reading program, the northeast library will host a reptile show on July 23 at 2 p.m.

Massive burrito celebrates project's anniversary

Something good was cooking up at Weill Park on Sunday.

Every Sunday for the past year, Belinda Singleton and a bunch of volunteers with the Bakersfield Burrito Project have made it their mission to feed the homeless.

"Usually we feed 60 to 100 people every Sunday at noon," said Singleton.

The project started because many local agencies that feed the homeless don't operate on Sundays, and Singleton wanted to help fill the void.

So every Sunday, the group makes burritos and passes them out to the homeless for free.

Free mobile health clinics coming

With summer well underway the last things you may be thinking about are colds and vaccines, but now is the time to get your health needs met, and for free!

Throughout July, San Joaquin Community Hospital is hosting free mobile clinics, and one is coming on Thursday, July 8.

The clinic will be held from 9:00am-12:00pm in the parking lot of Wal-Mart, which is located at 2601 Fashion Place.

If you miss that one, another will be held on Wednesday, July 14 in the parking lot of the Kern County Dept. of Human Services, which is located at 100 E.

July declared parks month

The city of Bakersfield Recreation and Parks is proud to announce July as Park and Recreation Month.

You can take part in your favorite sport, spend the outdoors with your family and friends, or just relax.

There will be an open swim at all city pools on Tuesday and Friday, July 29. Barber Honda will be sponsoring free movies in The Park at River Walk's Bright House Networks Amphitheatre on Thursday nights starting July 15.

Kern County Museum has fun with water

The Kern County Museum has fun with water!

Learn about water, play in water, slide through water and generally celebrate this life-sustaining fluid we often take for granted. Don’t forget to wear your bathing suit!

Admission of $3 per person includes six game/ride tickets for children 3-12 and a variety of free activities all with a surfing theme.

Children under 3 can get in free. Extra game/ride tickets are 50 cents and a hot dog lunch is available for $3 per person.

Blaze prepare for July 4th extravaganza

The Bakersfield Blaze professional baseball club is getting set to celebrate America's birthday with a fireworks display for the ages.

Following the July 4th contest between the Blaze and San Jose Giants at Sam Lynn Ballpark, fans will be treated to a fireworks display that the Blaze are calling "the best in Bakersfield."

This is one of the most anticipated sporting events each year in Bakersfield with spectators packing the stands.

The Blaze are off to a great start to the second half of the season as the team looks to advance to the California League playoffs for the second straight year.
