Fire crews follow smoke to wildfire

By Tammy

Investigators think power poles in the area off Granite and Round Mountain Roads may be to blame for sparking a wildfire Sunday that blackened 270 acres.

The fire was about 40 acres when firefighters noticed a column of smoke while returning from another grass fire in the area around 8:40 a.m.

It took about 4 hours to contain the fire. Full control is expected early this afternoon.

A news release from the Kern County Fire Department credits home owners and their hazard reduction efforts for making it easier for crews to get control of the fire.

Child found dead in southwest home laid to rest

Submitted by Carol Ferguson on Friday, July 23rd, 6:25 pm

Loved ones said final farewells to a small child whose body was found left in a southwest Bakersfield home.  Three-year-old Serenity Gandara was laid to rest on Friday.

Friends and relatives said the death of the small child is such a tragedy.

"Serenity was our beloved Serenity," grandmother Renee Maese said.  "She came to us in this world, we cherished her."

The toddler's body was found Sunday in a home in the 5900 block of Summer Country Drive.  Her four-year-old brother had also been abandoned there.

The two were being cared for by their uncle and his wife.  Antonio and Carla Garcia were foster parents for the toddlers.

At Friday's funeral the children's parents wiped at their eyes, sitting in front of the small, white casket covered with flowers.

Pictures of Serenity were set nearby.  Maese said the family is coming together to comfort each other.  And they have special memories of Serenity.

Customer sued when car dealer doesn't pay off trade-in

Submitted by Carol Ferguson on Wednesday, July 14th, 5:15 pm

The customer traded in a car and figured the dealer paid it off.  But, now, she is being sued for the outstanding balance.

The customer who only wants to be identified as "Connie" said she traded in a 1997 Tahoe at Old Town Used Cars on East Truxtun back in 2008.

She bought a newer Tahoe, and says she had trouble getting the title for that car.  She finally gave up, and turned it back over to that lender.

But, now she faces a lawsuit because the lender for the '97 Tahoe hasn't been paid off.

"This has pretty much stressed me out, it leaves me with no vehicle," Connie told Eyewitness News.

Looking at the contract she had with Old Town Used Cars, it shows they took the trade-in, and it had an outstanding balance of $3,770.00.

Connie said she went to the DMV in 2008, and tried to get help.  At that point, she thought Old Town had straightened out the problem with paying off the '97 Tahoe.

The DMV did tell her O
